A recently published study by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in coordination with the Human Reproduction Update journal, sounded the alarm that male fertility could be declining worldwide.
The study documented the decrease in fertility and the concentration of sperm between 1973 and 2018.
It was based on an assessment of 40 previous studies on the subject and concluded that the decline in male reproductive health is universal but not general. It explained that the quantity of sperm is not the only factor that affects male fertility; movement also plays an important role in fecundity.
Endocrinologist Channa Jayasena, a professor at the Imperial College of London, attributed this situation to obesity, physical inactivity, pollution, and exposure to chemicals.
The results coincide with the world’s population hitting the milestone of 8 billion.
