Morocco moved one spot and ranked 4th on the Climate Change Performance Index 2023, following Chile (3rd), Sweden (2nd), and Denmark (1st).
The index is established by non-governmental organizations Germanwatch, the Climate Action Network, and the New Climate Institute, and involves 60 countries and the EU. The assessment is made on the basis of 14 indicators in 4 categories, namely renewable energy, greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, and climate policy.
Morocco tops the rankings in the Arab world and in Africa thanks to its adherence to limiting global warming to 1.5° C, in accordance with the Paris Agreement.

Additionally, Morocco had met all its reporting obligations under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The Climate Change Performance Index is an instrument to enable transparency in national and international climate politics. It uses a standardized framework to compare the climate performance of 60 countries and the EU, which together account for 92% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
