MINUSMA (United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali), lost some of its Blue Helmets from Britain and Ivory Coasts within two days.
Britain’s Government minister said on Monday, that his country will withdraw 300 troops from the PKO assigned in Mali, following France’s withdrawal. They explained the decision by the fact that the Malian military regime collaborated with private contractors from Russia’s Wagner Group.
As for the Ivory Coast, this decision came after the detention of 49 of its troops by Bamako. The soldiers were accused of being mercenaries by Mali. Ivory Coast claims they were part of a security and logistics contingent supporting the UN peacekeeping deployment and has repeatedly requested their release.
For a decade, Mali has relied on regional allies and MINUSMA to contain an Islamist insurgency that has killed thousands and taken over large areas of the country’s center and north.
