On October 21st, Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, received in Rabat the Libyan Lower House speaker Aguila Saleh and the High Council of State chairman Khaled Al-Mishri.
This meeting resulted in an agreement between the two Libyan parties to implement the outputs of the inter-Libyan dialogue of Bouznika resting on the posts of sovereignty and unification of executive power. This is set to take place in the coming weeks before the end of December.
In order to do “what is necessary to initiate presidential and parliamentary elections,” the Libyan representatives mentioned wanting to “ensure that there is a single executive power in Libya as soon as possible.”
Aguila Saleh went on to state that the elections respect “a clear roadmap and legislation, on the basis of which the elections will be held.” The Libyan Lower House speaker did not miss the chance to praise the role played by King Mohammed VI in “watching over the stability of Libya and the preservation of its territory and its unity.” In addition to expressing his gratitude toward the Sovereign, he also mentioned the Moroccan people and government for their warm welcome and hospitality.
The High Council of State chairman, Khaled Al-Mishri, stated that the “splitting of institutions has only exacerbated the crisis and it was imperative to unify them.” Agreeing with Aguila, he also stressed the need to adopt the measures that will allow the conduct of the presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.
Al-Mishri also declared that the meeting held in Bouznika between the House of Representatives and the High Council of State allowed the parties to reach an agreement to unify power or sovereign institutions, which was applied to two sovereignty positions out of seven in Libya.
Khaled Al-Mishri expressed his gratitude to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan governments for the efforts deployed to ensure Libya’s stability adding that they “will continue our meetings in Morocco during the next period and will diligently follow the sound implementation of what has been agreed.”
The High Council of State chairman pointed out that these efforts date back to 2014 when Morocco avoided conflicts, ensured to tighten the Libyan rank, and find solutions through the reception of the Libyan parties without any interference.
