According to Europe1, former South African President Jacob Zuma, who was forced to resign in 2018 due to entanglement in corruption scandals and accusations, accused his successor Cyril Ramaphosa of being “corrupt.”
Commenting on the allegations that Cyril Ramaphosa was involved in an obscure burglary case, Zuma stated that “the president is corrupt” and “he has committed treason.” He then continued to declare that “no president should deal with private matters while in office” because it is contrary to the oath of office taken by the head of state.
Cyril Ramaphosa is accused of having hidden from the police and the tax authorities a burglary in one of his properties in 2020, during which large sums of cash were found hidden in furniture. He is also accused of organizing the kidnapping and interrogation of the robbers and bribing them to keep quiet. The results of the independent commission set up to investigate this incident could lead to his impeachment. Ramaphose denied all allegations and denounced this as a political maneuver.
Former President Zuma just got released earlier this month after serving 2 months out of the 15 months he was sentenced to and placed under judicial supervision on grounds of ill health. Imprisoned for contempt of court, Zuma called his imprisonment on Saturday “illegal” stating that “we must ensure that judges do not become politicians” and that the highest court in this country has violated the law.”
