Mikhail Tarasov, the chief of the Moroccan branch of the Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo), informed a TASS correspondent that, instead of the port of Las Palmas, Russian fishing vessels will be serviced in the Moroccan city of Casablanca (Canary Islands, Spain).

The implementation of restoration work in the port of Casablanca may involve specialized Russian businesses in the future. According to the Federal Agency for Fishery spokesman, Casablanca’s ship repair facilities are competitive with Canarian shipyards.
When it comes to African nations, Morocco is Russia’s top partner in fishing cooperation. The two countries signed a new intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the area of marine fisheries for a duration of four years between September and October 2020.
According to Mikhail Tarasov, repairs have traditionally been carried out in the port of Las Palmas.
Transferring the repair facility to Casablanca would raise the level of collaboration between Russia and Morocco in the fishing industry due to the EU’s stance on the problem of the admission of Russian fishing vessels and the prohibition of their stay in Las Palmas. In addition to providing local shipyards with hundreds of millions of euros, this project will also create hundreds of jobs for Moroccans. In 2023, they anticipate opening a new shipyard.
