Kamel El Amrani, the vice president of the Communal Council of Rabat, announced that the capital city wants to join the network of leading cities in the fight against climate change (C40) to continue the action within this grouping. El Amrani explained that “we aspire to join this network to act from within this grouping” for environmental resilience.
M24 issued this statement on the sidelines of his participation in the C40 summit in Buenos Aires. The C40 is a grouping of the world’s leading climate action cities that joined forces in 2005 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. El Amrani participated in the C40 summit alongside hundreds of mayors from five continents.
Stressing that its participation in this summit is part of the support of the parallel diplomacy of cities, El Amrani said that the city of Rabat had become a pioneer capital in the use of recycled water to irrigate the hundreds of hectares of its green spaces, 95% of which are maintained with this treated water.
The Vice President of the Council of Rabat added that this policy meets the royal directives for preserving water wealth, whether underground or surface, to cope with water stress.
The municipality of Rabat also implements other environmental programs in managing household waste currently subject to the burial process. From now on, this waste will be subjected to a sorting operation and put to good use so that it ceases to be an obstacle and becomes a valued asset.
El Amrani stressed that, as part of its national and international commitments, the action plan of the city includes the completion of the royal project “Rabat, city of light” and “cultural capital of the Kingdom,” and this, by preserving its cultural heritage and making it more attractive and accessible.
This global conclave of mayors is intended to be a space for reflection and exchange to explore best practices in the fight against climate change in cities and ways to meet the challenge of carbon neutrality.
The debates that will take place over two days will have to reach a new consensus on global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions in urban areas. The summit will be concluded by adopting a document on international financing of environmental projects.
