According to Reuters, Liz Truss announced her resignation on October 20th, just six weeks after she became UK’s prime minister. This decision came after her economic programs shook UK’s financial markets and divide the Conservative Party.
Speaking to reporters outside her office at Number 10 Downing Street, Truss acknowledged that after losing the faith of her party, she could not keep the promises she made when campaigning for Conservative leader.
“I recognize though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party,” said Truss.
During her mandate, she was forced to sack her finance minister and closest political ally, Kwasi Kwarteng, says Reuters. Even more recently, she lost the second of the government’s four most senior ministers and faced great division in her own party, adds Reuters.
Her resignation makes her UK’s shortest-serving prime minister in history.
