On Monday, October 17, violent clashes broke out for the fourth consecutive night between police and demonstrators near the neighborhoods of “Tadamon” (solidarity) and “Intilaqa” (departure) in the Tunisian capital. They were held to protest the death of a young man from injuries sustained during a police chase last August.
Videos posted on social media showed many protesters entering violent clashes with Tunisian police, where both regions experienced a significant state of congestion.
Media reports revealed that Tunisian police fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators, with demonstrators raising anti-cop slogans and throwing stones at the police.
The young man, Malik Salim, 24, succumbed to injuries a month after his hospital admission amid conflicting reports on the causes of his death.
The protests began last Friday after his funeral. The Tunisian Ministry of the Interior did not reveal the motives for the young man’s killing.
