Lisa McLain, an American congresswoman called for sanctions on Algeria for violation of “the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act” (CAATSA) on the 29th of September.
According to McLain, Algeria is growing its relationship with Russia and finalized last year a weapon deal of over 7 billion dollars. This deal included an advanced aircraft that was sold for the first time. The Congresswoman calls Blinken to assert sanctions authority and send a message that the United States will not tolerate diplomatic support from the Russian regime.
McLain got 26 congressmen and congresswomen to sign her letter to Blinken, stating that Congress passed the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act. This legislation directs the President of the United States to impose sanctions on individuals who knowingly “engages in a significant transaction with a person that is part of, or operates for or on behalf of, the defense or intelligence sectors of the Government of the Russian Federation.”
