Based on information provided by the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) arrested an extremist supporter of the terrorist group “Daesh” on Thursday for his alleged involvement in the planning of a terrorist project intended to seriously undermine public order.
According to a statement by the BCIJ, the operation to arrest this 29-year-old man was carried out in Casablanca by a brigade of the special force under the DGST. The suspect was looking for safe routes to terrorist organizations, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and the Syrian-Iraqi scene, according to preliminary results information from the investigation. In order to target security checkpoints and use their service weapons in terrorist operations, he also conducted reconnaissance visits to identify certain security checkpoints.
The statement also noted that as a result of the searches, computer equipment (including digital media, cell phones, SIM cards, CPU, and two laptops) was seized and is currently being examined by digital experts.
He was taken into custody in order to complete the investigation by the BCIJ under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office in charge of terrorist affairs, to uncover all potential connections of this terrorist project, and to determine its ramifications both domestically and internationally.
The statement concluded that this security operation underscores, once again, the importance and efficiency of preventive operations to neutralize terrorist threats. It also highlighted the effectiveness of close cooperation between the services of the DGST and U.S. security and intelligence services in the fight against terrorism and extremism at the international level.
