In light of the energy crisis the world is going through nowadays, due to the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Competition Council recommended accelerating the pace of implementing the energy transition strategy to overcome this crisis, which may be prolonged and will raise the issue of diversifying energy sources on the level of several countries in the world, including Morocco.
This came along on Monday with the recommendations of the council within its opinion on “the significant rise in prices of raw materials and feedstocks in the global market, and its implications on the competitive functioning of national markets regarding the state of fuel (gas and gasoline),” highlighting that the current crisis has caused historical and unprecedented increases, especially energy products that are of strategic importance to the population and the national economy in general.
In its opinion copy of which Barlaman Today has received, The Competition Council pointed out that Morocco has been working since 2009 on the adoption of a proactive and ambitious energy strategy, one of the goals of which is to double the share of renewable energies in installed electric power by 40 percent by 2021 and 51 percent by 2030, to enable the country to reduce its dependence on imports of fossil energy products.
Moreover, the source called for resorting to public transport means that are powered by renewable energies and encouraging the purchase and use of electric cars by public authorities.
The council continued: ”It is true that the decisions to be taken to address the economic nature of constraints, and those related to energy security and accessibility in the short term will not be easy, however, the current unprecedented circumstances may contribute to compensating for this difficulty for two reasons”.
According to the same source, on the one hand, it has to do with the fact that “the development of renewable energies is an important investment in the beginning. However, at the time when they are being exploited, the marginal costs tend to be very small or close to zero,” while on the other hand, it concerns “the high prices of imported energy products in the meantime, which are much less competitive compared to the prices of renewable energies, and are considered non-exhaustible sources,” according to the Competition Council.
