Aicha Ech-Chenna, Moroccan women’s rights defender and activist, passed away this morning in Cheikh Khalifa hospital in Casablanca, where she was admitted a few days ago. The activist was 81 years old.
The late women’s rights defender was born on August 14th, 1941, in Casablanca. She went on to become a nurse and worked in the Ministry of Health where she helped provide care for underprivileged women.
In 1985, the late Aicha Ech-Chenna founded the Feminine Solidarity Association (ASF), a charity located in Casablanca that works tirelessly to assist single mothers and victims of rape.
In 2002, the association became a non-governmental organization and received a donation from King Mohammed VI. In 1996, Aicha Ech-Chenna published a book entitled “Misery: Testimonies” which tells the stories of 20 single mothers she had worked with.
Aicha Ech-Chenna is an internationally recognized women’s rights advocate, having received many awards for her unmatched commitment and devotion to single mothers’ cause such as the 2009 Opus Prize.
